Chef Hemant Mathur

Chef Hemant Mathur holds the unique distinction of being the first Indian chef in the U.S. to be awarded a Michelin star and retain it across two New York City restaurants – Devi and Tulsi.

With over 30 years of professional culinary experience, Chef Mathur is best known as a tandoor master of traditional clay ovens, hailed as the “Yo-Yo Ma of tandoori cooking” by The New York Times. He not only won over New Yorkers’ hearts with distinctive Indian tastes & flavors but also became one of USA’s top Tandoor masters and the main inspiration behind the success of some of the city’s top Indian restaurants. Hemant Mathur is now one of the top live Indian chef’s America (as picked by CQ Magazine).

Today the Chef-entrepreneur Hemant Mathur co-owns and is the Executive Chef of SAAR Indian Bistro in Midtown and Veeray da Dhaba in New York City. In addition Chef Mathur is the founder and Director of Hemant Mathur Catering that has catered many upscale weddings acquiring the Couple’s Choice Award on Wedding Wire in 2020, and has worked for prestigious events including at the United Nations, Indian Consulate, American Indian Foundation, and more in the US and beyond.

Chef Hemant has sought the perfect balance of fresh, flavorful ingredients and innovative Indian cuisine; he takes his product-and his passion-very seriously, almost reverentially. His long-standing presence in the global fine dining industry has helped change the way Indian food and hospitality has been perceived in the US and he strives to expand people’s notion of the breadth of Indian cuisine

Backstory

The joumey started a most a decace back for the man behind Just R. – Jithesh, a seasoned tech entrepreneur and Foroes Rusiness Council member, based in Los Angeles, California.

An everycay rice past the large white ‘R’ on a hills’de enroute to down-Town Burbank in California, was perhaps where it all started. Likely to have come up in the 1920s when there was a fad of hillside letters, which the famous ‘Hollywood’ sign is also part of, the B’ could have simply meant Burbank. The origin and mystery behind the ‘B’ remain; out it became iconic, something that people loved to see… and it came to represent who we are in Burbank. For Jithesh, it became an inspiration, triggering a different mood and emotion every day, to be happy, be cool, be smart, be kind, he adventurous, be gentle, be bold, be fun… or just be you, the best version of yourself. This left an indelible impression in his mind, which years later, manifested itself in this dream project of his to create a grand, awe-inspiring, and joyful ambience; brimming with exuberance, lifting the human spirit and inspiring a sense of culture, community & experience, by allowing people to “just be”.

And he believed and krew, theres no better place than Goa to bring this idea to fruition, as it fits well with the Goan susegan way of life that attracts people from all walks of life and from across the world.
